Health Update – 25 August 2012


Hit my first 30 lb. lost this week!!!
This week’s weight loss was a little lower than normal, but I’m not surprised at all. Last weekend was the annual family picnic and I know I ate more than I normally would. Didn’t go completely off track, but did indulge a little more than I normally would. I would have been happy with just staying even with last week, so I’m very happy with the 1 1/2 lb. I lost this week. Average loss per week is still running just a bit under 3 lb.

Had another great week for weight loss. Dropped another 3 1/2 lb. and had both my stomach and waist measurements go down. One more pound and I’ll hit the first 30 lost! Average loss per week is still running just a bit under 3 lb.

Another great week in the health department. Dropped another 3 3/4 lb., plus some measurable reductions in my stomach and waist measurements. Average loss per week so far is just under 3 lb. This week also showed my first 20 lb. lost!

Continued the weight loss trend this week, down another 2 1/4 lbs. Average loss per week so far is right around 2 3/4 lbs. Next week I should make it to the first 20 lb. lost. Stomach and waist stayed the same this week, but my neck went down.

Saw the orthopedic surgeon today about my shoulder. He took some x-rays, and thinks I have some tendonitis in my traps and/or shoulder. We agreed on keeping up with the anti-inflammatories and trying some physical therapy for a month, 3x week, and see how that goes. Have two PT sessions scheduled for next week.

Workout

Legs week continues. Same basic intervals as last time

  • Running in laps then find partner and do daily dozen (4 squats, 4 pushups, 4 vees). The Vees are still really hard, but I think I’m getting the technique down a little better.
  • More squat and come up into a knee and snowboarders.
  • Final interval was lunges, where on each timer, we had to stay in the knee down position and touch 1 times, then 2, then 3, etc. Final goal was ten touches on each lunge. I made it up through three. After that I had to take some breaks and never made it to 4 or more. This is an improvement over Monday, where I only made it up through 2 knee touches.

Muay Thai continued to practice elbows. These were more with a shoulder extension at the end, compared to the Krav Maga elbow which has a lot more body twist behind it.

Continued to work the Krav Maga static front choke and front choke w/ push defense. They are both starting to feel pretty natural. My partner and I were doing one step of the static front choke defense different than taught and we cleared up that problem.

Watching all those kicking videos seems to be paying off. My kicks, both left and right, felt stronger and I think I’m starting to get my body programmed to do the hip roll over part. Understanding the concept of throwing with the hip movement is a big breakthrough for me.

Doctors Visits and ABD Sale

Shoulder is still really stiff in the mornings. Can’t even lift my arm to turn off the alarm. Saw both the foot Dr. and regular Dr. today. Toe is healing up fine. Now I just have to wait for the nail to grow back, which apparently takes 8 – 10 months. Who knew? Regular Dr. has referred me to an orthopedist for my shoulder problems. Will see him next week and get the full story.

Good news from the Dr. was that my cholesterol numbers have all dropped significantly and I dropped my A1C in the past 3 months from 5.8 to 5.5. The A1C drop is from nothing but exercise and changes in my diet.

Took advantage of the ABD Norwich Christmas in July 20% off sale. Ordered some better boxing gloves, my original ones are coming apart at the seams, a pair of MMA gloves I’ll need for the next quarter and a Wavemaster 2XL Pro. Decided that hanging bag was not feasible for the space I have in the basement. Also found some MMA flooring that priced for my budget, and was on sale. I’ll write more about how I like it once it gets here and I have it setup.

Workout

Did some yoga to help open my hips and some for the neck and shoulders. Found both videos on youtube. Thinking of trying the Yoga for Guys class at a friends yoga studio. I can use all the help I can get in improving my flexibility and core strength.

The Good

Significant improvements in my latest cholesterol and A1C levels. Toe’s just fine, even without a toe nail.

To Improve

Keep working on my flexibility.

Downward Trend Chart Had another solid week in the weight loss department. Average loss per week so far is just over 3 lb/week. No measurable inches this week, but since I only measure in 1/2 inch increments and only measure three locations, I’m not too worried about the the measurements not going down. As long as the weight is dropping, I’m happy.

Had another good week in the weight loss department. Average loss per week so far is just over 3 lb/week. It’s higher then the usual 1-2 lb/week rule, but I’ve also read that 1% of total body weight is also acceptable, and right now I’m close to that threshold.
